MY EASTER PRAYER
Rejoice!
He Is Risen!

A congregation is very much like an individual person.  Routines and rituals help both to live each day without having to plan each moment.  They both have times of health and enthusiasm, as well as periods of illness and fatigue.  For a congregation and an individual there are times of great certainty about what is right and wrong, and other times of quiet listening to discern the will of  God.

But also, a congregation is like an individual always a mixture of both wellness and illness, hope and concern, and activism with the world and sometimes more passive living.  Sometimes in our personal lives we may find that our work  or retirement is very satisfying, giving us inspiration and energy to be open minded and creative .  But at the same time, a friend may be ill or troubled, requiring our prayers and patience.  In a congregation we experience similar tensions.

The challenge to us as individuals and as a community is to keep these different aspects of our life in perspective.  We need to know when to decide, to plan or to change things, but we also have to know when to celebrate the good things with which we have been blessed.  Sometimes we need to be still to find out how God speaks in our lives.

This year I will celebrate my fourth Easter in the United States.  This Easter my prayer is that we be inspired to be people of great faith.  This means that we as a congregation and as individuals may not lose hope, but always wait that hopeless circumstances will change - as the disciples waited from Good Friday to Easter morning.  My Easter prayer is that we may rejoice when we recognize the energy of the risen Christ in our lives - so that on the day of Pentecost we have the faith and courage to answer to the invitation of the Divine Spirit to love as we have been loved - as individuals and as a congregation.

May we all be blessed by the peace of the risen Christ this Easter.

           Love,

           Rev. Wilfried

OUR NEW ARCHITECT IS......

The Building 5 Committee decided to explore the possibility of changing architects.  In February the committee, along with the Rev. Wilfried Glabach and Owner's Representative Gilbert Chan, interviewed architects and their project managers from three firms.   Each was evaluated for different aspects, such as design aesthetic, the project manager we would work with, how well they listened, and amount of their fee.  Ultimately, the committee's choice was Ron Case of CASE Architects.

There were many advantages in choosing Ron.  The committee overwhelmingly preferred his design aesthetic, based on photos of his work on the chapel and library of Sacred Heart School (which we will tour after the Spring Meeting), and the renovation of the sanctuary of St. Hillary's Church in Tiburon.  Former clients have given him glowing recommendations, saying that he brought the project in on time and on budget, he's easy to work with, and is a good listener.  He is also very accessible, as his office is a few blocks away from our Polk Street site.  He is an integral part of that community, as he and wife Carolyn Abst, also an architect, are co-founders of Lower Polk Neighbors.

An added bonus is that his fee is the lowest of all the candidates.

HOLY WEEK EVENTS
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICES
On April 9th, the Rev. Wilfried Glabach and Seminary Intern Matthew Davis Fox will conduct a Good Friday service at 1302 Polk St. at 3 PM.

St. Mark's  Lutheran Church will hold services at noon and 7:30 PM.

CELEBRATE EASTER
On Sunday, April 11th, not only will we celebrate Easter, but we will also welcome new members to our church family.
Music Director Kelly Crandell's plans for Easter music are not finalized, but  there will be some brass instrumentalists, and possibly others as well.
IT'S LILY TIME AGAIN
Honor or remember loved ones and decorate our worship space with Easter lilies.  To order, send $10 for each plant ordered with the form below by Sunday, April 4th, or drop it in the offering plate on that day.  If you can help deliver them to our homebound members,  please contact the Ken Tipton.
LOOK FOR OUR EASTER AD
This year we will have a joint Easter ad with St. John's UCC in the San Francisco Chronicle.  Look for it in the Living Section on Sunday, April 4th.  Thanks to the Rev. Kyle Lovett, pastor of St. John's, for her work on the ad design and layout.

Join us on Sunday, April 4th for our annual Congregational Spring Meeting.    As always, we will vote on a goal budget; the  Building 5 Committee will give an update of recent activities.

Come and meet our new architect, Ron Case of CASE Architects.   After the meeting, at about 2 :15 PM, he will give us  a tour of  Sacred Heart School chapel and library, which he designed.

The meeting is Pot Luck.  Please bring a dish to share .  We will have lunch after worship, and start the meeting about 1 PM.

FIRST CONGREGATIONAL PARISH HAPPENINGS
THANK YOUS!
In the past few months we have been blessed with some very generous gifts:
  • Last November, former Music Director Bryan Baker gave a concert  for the benefit of First Congregational Church.  . We have received the proceeds of $300. Thank you, Bryan.
  • At Wilfried's installation, the Rev. Hans-Pieter Bruckhoff, Wilfried's  former Supervisor in Germany, gave the church a donation of $845 from his congregation. Danke schön .
  • Duc Huynh, custodian for St. Mark's, gave us his VCR.  Now we can show both DVD's and videos.  Thanks, Duc.
TRANSITION COMMITTEE FORMING
For some time, it has been apparent that we need a new Constitution.   Our current one was written for a very large congregation, and no longer works for this now small church.
A Transition Committee, which will  serve as both the Nominating Committee and the new Constitution Committee, is now forming.  The Rev. Wilfried Glabach, Moderator Nancy McManus, and Lucille Dean are committee members thus far, but volunteers are welcome.  Contact Nancy McManus if interested in serving on the committee or for more information.

PLEDGE TIME IS COMING
At the Spring Meeting we will vote on the goal budget for the 2004-2005 fiscal year; at the Annual Meeting we will vote on the final budget.  Budgeting decisions we make will depend in large part on the amount we  pledge.

The pledge drive will end on Mother's Day, May 9th.  During this time, we hope you will give careful consideration to the amount you can pledge.  While some churches require members to tithe, that is, to give ten percent of their income to the church, we, of course, do not.  In this church, giving is purely voluntary.  If you cannot give money, you can  pledge service to the church, such as volunteering to work in the office a few hours a week.  If you like to cook and are comfortable cooking for a  large group of people, consider pledging to cook our Thanksgiving and/or Christmas luncheon.  That would be a most appreciated gift.

We hope  that you will support your church to the best of your ability.

ON THE MOVE
When we came to the Urban Life Center, we thought we might be here for a few months, but we have been blessed to be here almost three years.

But the day must come when St. Mark's must retrofit and renovate their sanctuary, as there is still a damage from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.  You may have seen the large crack in the wall above the altar. They expect to start work by fall, and when that happens, they will need the auditorium where we now worship for their services.

Where will we go?   Property Chair Lucille Dean has been in discussion with Mercy Housing about the possibility of renting two street level spaces, for worship and offices, in the building which they are converting to low-income senior housing, across from our Polk Street property.   By being in that neighborhood full time, we would become a more integral part of the community.

The space should be available in October.  Come to the Spring Meeting for more information, or contact Lucille.

 THEY'RE OFF TO ASILOMAR
Moderator Nancy McManus and Ken Tipton are the official delegates to the Northern California Nevada Conference Annual Meeting at Asilomar.  They will join the Rev. Wilfried Glabach at the Asilomar meeting, which will take place from June 3rd to 6th

"REACH UP - REACH OUT"
"Reach Up - Reach Out" is the theme of the Golden Gate Association
Annual Meeting, which will take place on Saturday, April 24th from 11 AM to 2 PM. at City of Refuge.

Gayle Madison, new Associate Conference Minister, will speak;     new members and officers of the Golden Gate Association Board of Directors will be elected.  Other business includes welcoming newly installed ministers of the Association, including our Rev. Wilfried Glabach and the Rev. Kyle Lovett of St. John's UCC; welcoming a new congregation and acknowledging the leaving of two others;
announcement of grants received and introducing in-care persons and churches.

City of Refuge will prepare a fantastic meal.
