November 2nd is Election Day, and sometimes I wish that I could participate in the election. But as a German citizen, I am a Resident Alien and do not have a vote. Some people told me, whatever the outcome, they will be glad when it is over. I am sure that some will be happy by the results, and others will be disappointed, but regardless of who wins or loses, our world will still be broken and full of suffering. No president will have the power to cure this. We still face problems in our lives; grief and loss continue to haunt us; we still face the challenge of finding meaning and faith that can sustain us even through tough times in our lives. I often compare the election campaign with the campaigns in Germany. In some ways they are different. Speeches in the U.S. often carry religious overtones, personal biographies become more important than programs for the future. Politicians make promises, but no new administration can deliver friendship, peace of mind, individual personal integrity or a sense of self-worth. Finding the qualities that make life worth living, integrating them into our daily lives, passing them to others, will continue to be our personal responsibility, regardless of who controls City Hall, Congress or the White House. Voting is an important right, but there are many other ways that we can exercise power in our lives, or influence the world in which we live for the better. We have to start with ourselves, in our home, in our congregation: with how I treat my neighbor, relate to my family, care for the community, how I work and how I play. Let us hope that our future depends less on who gets elected than on our ability to exercise our own power for peace and justice in the world. Grace and peace,

| 'TIS THE SEASON
It's getting cold outside, and the Rev. Dora Ford has sounded the clarion call for warm clothing in good condition for men and women residents of Cornell Halfway House. No doubt many of us will receive brand new warm sweaters and jackets for Christmas. Cornell residents would surely appreciate any that you will no longer wear that are in good condition. This is a great way to do some Fall cleaning also. Please bring clothing donations to the office during the week, or to Polk Street on Sundays. |
FEED THE HUNGRY
In recent years, the Food Banks have been suffering dwindling donations of food for their clients. They cannot distribute food to the hungry if they don't have it on their shelves. While you're scurrying around preparing for Thanksgiving dinner, please keep the San Francisco Food Bank in mind, and their clients, many of them AIDS patients. A few extra non-perishable items, such as canned goods, rice, pasta, cereal, etc. for the Food Bank would be greatly appreciated. |
