Jesus Loves Me
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
"We constitute this church by binding ourselves in covenant with another in order to worship God, to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ, to celebrate the Sacraments, to foster Christian fellowship and unity throughout the church universal, to dialogue with followers of other religions, to encourage spiritual seekers, to render loving service to all people, and to strive for righteousness, justice, and peace locally and globally, not merely tolerating but rejoicing in diversity of age, race, ethnicity, language, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and physical and mental ability, affirming and opening ourselves to all God’s children.

For the sake of these goals we promise to pray for our church, to participate in our church’s worship, to shoulder a share of the work of our church, and to support our church from the wealth God has given us – each as we are able to do so."

Adopted:  November 7, 2004
Amended:  June 21, 2007

This statement is the result of a long held conviction of the members and friends of First Congregational Church of San Francisco.  From the beginning of this church, during the gold rush, to the present time, this community of faith has stood for the full rights and inclusiveness of all people regardless of race, class, ethnicity, beliefs, ability or sexual orientation. Each person who has graced our doorway is greeted with honest welcome.  Each person in our pew is acknowledged as a child of the living God, and is a minister in her or his own right, able to share the gifts of God with us all. This church was the eighteenth UCC congregation to declare itself Open and Affirming of all people, and one of the few I have come across who really mean it.  We are open to all, and affirming that God blesses all of us with gifts, and there is no aspect of ministry that is beyond this reality.

After the brutal death of Matthew Shepherd, Rev. Paul Sherry, President of our denomination, urged us to be more proactive in our affirming stance toward people of various sexual orientations. There have been other brutal deaths at the hands of hateful people, some of them self-avowing Christians.  But Matthew’s death struck at the heart of America.  The Church has been silent long enough.  Injustice cannot be tolerated, much less supported, by people who claim the Gospel as their guiding moral light.  People who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, have the right to be respected and to have the opportunity for full inclusion, especially by the Church which has historically closed its doors to such people.  The gifts of God are freely given, and it is an honor to know that at First Congregational, they are freely received as well.

The Word of God tells us that if we remain silent in the face of injustice, even the stones and hills themselves will shout out for justice.  And so, with deep love and the stronghold of a compassionate faith, we say to the world, all, and we mean all, are welcome here, at our house, at our table, in our hearts.  Come, all who labor and are heavy laden, come.  Here, Christ is present, and Christ will give you rest.  Come, and receive the refreshing waters of Christ’s own love.

Now, No Condemnation! All are free. Thanks be to God!
